Pacific Coast Cycles
A disclosure. I am not Pacific Coast Cycles. This is just a short story of a bike shop and its owner.
Chucks Story
Chuck owned Pacific Coast Cycles, first in Carlsbad and then Oceanside on the Pacific Coast Highway. Chuck bought the shop in 1977, having worked for Masi Bicycles in Vista, California. He began riding off-road in the early eighties and sold what he liked, which worked. Typically not your lightweight CNC parts with a short life that happened during the CNC craze. This was the place to go for your mountain bike. Chuck loves riding off-road with dirt-drop bars typically from WTB, and also likes the early suspension. You'll find he sold a lot of bikes from the likes of Ibis, Salsa, Willits, Merlin and WTB (to name just a few brands) with drop bar handlebars and sensible components. He also sold nice road bikes.
He is good friends with Ross Shafer (founder of Salsa Cycles), and Ross was one of a few people who offered stems back in the day. Chuck gave Ross the idea to add a roller on his stems; thus, the Pro Moto was created. Thanks, guys!
I became friends with Chuck long ago, and it was a great place to hang out. We spent many hours talking, and I attempted (!) to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I also bought a lot of vintage mountain bikes and components from him. I was sad to see him retire, but I wish him and his wife many happy years to come.
If you were a customer at Chuck’s shop, send me a message. I’d love to hear from you.
